History| When Nettlestar was born, his mother was out in the forest and had not had enough strength or time to get back to the camp before she kitted. So Greenmist had to have her kits alone. It was a painful process, and she was forever weakened by it. Her firstborn, Sunkit, the light tan of her own pelt, died soon thereafter from greencough. Greenmist died of greencough that winter too, when Nettlestar and his remaining brother, at the time Dustkit, were only five moons old. The death of his mother scarred Nettlestar and him and his brother became closer than ever.
They went through their apprenticeship together without much trouble. At the end of every day, the brothers would share tongues while they described the day that they had spent, and then each would share their feelings. Nettlepaw put all of his trust in his brother, and would have never told any of this to any other cat.
When the brothers were warriors, they were the best of friends, inseparable. They still told each other their secrets and would never part. Dustfur was the only cat he could open up to, and trusted him wholly. His heart soon beat for another, and he fell in love with a beautiful tabby named Smokemist. Nettleclaw padded after her, wanting to please her in anyway he can. Dustfur soon felt left out, and got quite jealous of his brother's love. He became resentful and bitter. When Nettleclaw finally noticed his brother's jealousy, it was too late, and Dustfur was to far gone into his world of anger and green envy.
One day Nettleclaw was out hunting with Smokemist and they split up, later to meet up at the large oak tree. Nettleclaw hunted as best he could all day, and soon returned to the oak tree. He waited all afternoon, until dusk. He decided his love had gone back to camp. He retrieved his fresh-kill and headed back to camp. When he didn't find her there, he became frantic and went in a search. It was dark, and it had been raining that day, so Smokemist's scent was lost. He combed the forest, calling her name until he could no longer mew. Nettleclaw was exhausted. He was about to give up when he saw something in the bushes just out of the corner of his eye. He padded silently and peered through the bushes, only to fall back in horror. There was the love of his life, his mate, his Smokemist, dead and cold. Nettleclaw knew immediately who it was. Tearing through the forest in a rage, he sped back into camp and right away located his brother. He took him out into the forest, telling his unsuspecting brother that he needed help to carry a hawk he had caught. But Dustfur knew better. He dutifully followed his brother, but was planning to kill him like he had Smokemist.
They went deep into the forest and stopped, staring into each other's souls.
"We used to be so close..." Nettleclaw mewed sadly. His eyes softened at the memories of his apprenticeship with his brother.
"That is over now." Dustfur growled and flew at him. They fought until dawn when Nettleclaw finally had Dustfur pinned.
"This is for Smokemist." he said. Nettleclaw closed his eyes and silently killed his brother. He didn't want to do it, but he had had to. Now Nettleclaw was alone in this world.
Nettleclaw went on with his warrior duties, day in and day out. It was all he could do to not think about what had happened in the past. He never noticed the leader getting older and weaker, and the rest of the clan now treating him with large amounts of respect and responsibility. He just went through his days as he always had. It was not a surprise to any cat when their old leader died, but it was a sad day. That night the new leader named Nettleclaw the deputy. The only cat in the Clan who was surprised was Nettleclaw. He gratefully accepted the honor. Soon his leader died and he became leader, to rule and love his clan.
But he learned how to close himself up, how to keep all of his emotions inside, and how to not allow anyone to take advantage of him. This is why Nettlestar is the way he is today.
